NCC Slams Telecos Over ‘Nuisance, Irritating’ Unsolicited Texts & Calls

ncc

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has again expressed displeasure over what it termed nuisance and irritations of unsolicited text messages and calls from mobile network operators.

The Commission reiterated its readiness to protect subscribers from such disturbances.

Mr. Tony Ojobo, director, Public Affairs, noted in a statement, that in spite of earlier warnings to telecommunication service providers to activate their Do-Not-Disturb facility which gives subscribers the freedom to choose the messages they receive, the Commission is still inundated with complaints by subscribers of continuing text harassment by operators.

The Direction issued to industry operators to activate the 2442 Do Not Disturb Short Code took effect from July 1, 2016.

Ojobo explained that the Direction mandates the operators to take immediate action which will allow the subscribers to take informed but independent decisions on what messages to receive from the networks.

He observed that industry compliance doesn’t seem to have matched the seriousness of the Direction thus, compelling the Commission to issue a final warning to the operators.

According to him, the Direction takes into cognizance the broad range of services, which include: Banking/Insurance/Financial products, Real estate, Education, Health, Consumer Goods and Automobiles, Communication/ Broadcasting/ Entertainment/ IT, Tourism and /Leisure, Sports, Religion (Christianity, Islam, others), and directed the operators to give the necessary instructions and clarifications that will enable subscribers subscribe to a particular service/services/none at all.

In fact, a Full DND which is SMS ‘STOP” to 2442 does not allow the subscriber to receive any unsolicited messages from the operators at all.

Below are the various options:
“SMS 1” for receiving SMS relating to Banking/Insurance/ Financial Products to 2442
“SMS 2” for receiving SMS relating to Real estate to 2442
SMS 3” for receiving SMS relating to Education to 2442
“SMS 4” for receiving SMS relating to Health to 2442
“SMS 5” for receiving SMS relating to Consumer Goods and Automobiles, to 2442
“SMS 6” for receiving SMS relating to Communication/ Broadcasting/ Entertainment/ IT, to 2442
“SMS 7” for receiving SMS relating to Tourism and Leisure to 2442
“SMS 8” for receiving SMS relating to Sports to 2442
“SMS 9” for receiving SMS relating to Religion to 2442

Ojobo called on the service providers to immediately comply with the Direction as further complaints from the subscribers would be taken as serious infractions to a major regulatory intervention by the Commission.

Annular Eclipse to Occur All Over Nigeria Sept 1 | VAS2Nets Technologies

Annular eclipse

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has announced that an annular eclipse will be visible all over the country on Thursday, September 1.

Annular eclipse is the eclipse of the sun in which the edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon. An annular eclipse occurs when the sun and moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the moon is smaller than that of the sun, hence, the sun appears as a very bright ring or annulus surrounding the dark disk of the moon.

In a press statement, the Head, Media and Corporate Communications of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Felix Ale, said the highest degree of obscurity in Nigeria during this natural occurrence would be in the Southern part of the country, particularly in Lagos

The annular eclipse is expected to occur between 7.15 a.m. and 10.03 a.m., with slight variations in actual timing across the country.

In Lagos, the first contact will occur at about 7.15 a.m., while the maximum eclipse will occur around 8.30 a.m. and will end by 10.03 a.m.

The eclipse is expected to commence in Abuja around 7.17 a.m., with maximum eclipse to be recorded at about 8.32 a.m. and the eclipse will end around 10.00 a.m.

NASRDA appealed to the general public not to panic or adduce any mystical interpretations to this event, it is also necessary to advise that nobody should observe eclipse with naked eyes.

Looking at the solar eclipse with naked eyes can lead to permanent damage to the eyes, as the obstruction does not reduce the luminosity of the sun.

Therefore, NASRDA has also concluded arrangements to provide limited number of special solar filters to members of the public to savour the rare natural occurrence in appreciation of science and nature.
