malaria_special_2

Last weekend, the Federal government said that it has stepped up vigilance within the drug supply chains in the country after it discovered the circulation of two confirmed falsified versions of Quinine Sulphate.

A statement said the Federal ministry of Health received a medical alert that the two falsified drugs contain zero active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The statement signed by Mrs Boade Akinola, director, Media and Public Relations of the ministry, on Saturday said the drugs were circulating in West and Central Africa.

Akinola said the two version of the drug were circulating in Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo.

She said the quinine Sulphate was used in the treatment of malaria.

According to her, the implication of using the falsified one is that it will not be effective and may also lead to other health challenges.

She said one of the fake products was named Quinine Sulfate 300 mg with 1000 Tablets per container, Batch Number 10H05, expiry date 09/2018 and it manufactured 09/2014.

Akinola added that the drug manufactured by Novadina Pharmaceutical Limited, London, United Kingdom was first was discovered in Cameroon.

The director said the other version of the fake drug was Quinine Sulphate 300mg with 100 Tablets per container; batch F4387, expiry date 11/18 and its date of manufacture is 12/14.

She explained that the product was manufactured in India by CAD Pharm, and it was discovered in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

She advised Nigerians to be vigilant and report to the nearest National Agency for Food and Drug Administration office anywhere the drugs were spotted including hospitals and pharmaceutical shops.

The ministry urges Nigerians to also report it the following GSM no +234-8037881120, +234-8055056727 and +234-8035902679.

Annular Eclipse to Occur All Over Nigeria Sept 1 | VAS2Nets Technologies

Annular eclipse

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has announced that an annular eclipse will be visible all over the country on Thursday, September 1.

Annular eclipse is the eclipse of the sun in which the edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon. An annular eclipse occurs when the sun and moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the moon is smaller than that of the sun, hence, the sun appears as a very bright ring or annulus surrounding the dark disk of the moon.

In a press statement, the Head, Media and Corporate Communications of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Felix Ale, said the highest degree of obscurity in Nigeria during this natural occurrence would be in the Southern part of the country, particularly in Lagos

The annular eclipse is expected to occur between 7.15 a.m. and 10.03 a.m., with slight variations in actual timing across the country.

In Lagos, the first contact will occur at about 7.15 a.m., while the maximum eclipse will occur around 8.30 a.m. and will end by 10.03 a.m.

The eclipse is expected to commence in Abuja around 7.17 a.m., with maximum eclipse to be recorded at about 8.32 a.m. and the eclipse will end around 10.00 a.m.

NASRDA appealed to the general public not to panic or adduce any mystical interpretations to this event, it is also necessary to advise that nobody should observe eclipse with naked eyes.

Looking at the solar eclipse with naked eyes can lead to permanent damage to the eyes, as the obstruction does not reduce the luminosity of the sun.

Therefore, NASRDA has also concluded arrangements to provide limited number of special solar filters to members of the public to savour the rare natural occurrence in appreciation of science and nature.
